Select the Type of Windows
It is essential to know what type of windows you will be using. Most windows follow similar procedures and steps, but some types of windows require special handling. Thus, it is important to pay careful attention to various aspects of the new windows. For instance, make sure that the replacement window size is suitable for the size of your existing window.
Replace the Studs
The studs are an important factor to consider when you are learning how to frame a window. The studs support the weight of the roof and the walls. Furthermore, it provides structural integrity to the windows. There are several different types of studs. It is important to know the basics about each type of stud.
- Sill: The sill is a board that runs parallel to the windows along the bottom. It gives more structural integrity to the windows. In addition, it keeps the windows from completely settling into the wall.
- Header: This type of stud runs atop the frame of the window. It distributes the load of the studs above it equally across the other studs.
- Trimmer Studs: Trimmer studs run along side the frame of the window. These studs are what the windows are directly attached to. They are perhaps the most important stud to know, when you are leaning how to frame a widow.
- King Stud: These are key support studs that carry a significant amount of weight from the windows. It also runs the entire length of the wall.
Check the Measurements of the Windows.
It is imperative to check and recheck your measurements. Getting the wrong measurements can be inconvenient, time-consuming, and costly. Thus, do not only measure once, but twice to be absolutely sure. Just a fraction of an inch off can result in the replacement windows not sealing or fitting properly. You may also want to cut the studs that are in the way.
Frame a Window Using a Header
After the cutting, you will want to make a header beam. A header beam will transfer the load of the cut out and removed studs to the surrounding studs that are still intact. This technique is called framing. This step is the most important as it helps preserve the structural integrity of the wall. Learning how to frame a window is basically making sure your measurements are right and attaching the header beam properly. The rest of the framing process only involves nailing pieces of wood, and hanging the window itself. For a beginner with little or no construction experience, learning how to frame a window is typically a complicated endeavor. Even though there is a good deal of room for error, the process is actually fairly simple for someone who is inclined to this type of construction. However, it is advised to consult a professional if you are not completely sure of your sills.
