A Medieval Home Selling Tip!

Jan 21, 2011 | Jennifer Frost | Categories : Home Selling Tips | 5 Comments

At one time or another a homeseller and their agent started to think “How are we ever going to sell this house, we have tried everything.” Maybe they didn’t.   A popular option over the years is to bury a St. Joseph Statue. This statue is known as the Patron Saint of the Home.

This all began hundreds of years ago in Europe.  An order of nuns would bury their St. Joseph medal when they needed more land for convents. And guess what?? Their prayer was heard and in a short period of time they received their request. No one knows how it evolved into the statues that are used today.

Some people look at it as a superstition, some think “might as well try something crazy”, and others consider that they are putting the sale of their home in the hands of a higher power.

To use a St. Joseph statue, the tradition dictates that you find a location that you like on your property (even right next to the “For Sale” sign), and bury it upside down facing towards the house. You are supposed to ask for help until your house is sold. After it is sold you remove the statue, take it with you, and place it in your new home.

Be sure to tell us your findings, or if you know anyone who has tried it!

I tried it, but it didn’t seem to make a difference. Maybe I didn’t have enough faith, because one friend of mine swore she did it and her house sold the next day!

Interesting article Jen – curious myself to see what the feedback will be. I have heard rumors that it works but then again maybe it’s just pricing.

It worked for me. In November 2006 we listed our house for sale in Pelham. We bought a St Joseph house selling kit and followed the instructions exactly. Our house closed on December 31st 2006 at FULL asking price. Something besides our agent was at work here. Try it and have faith.

My father used to keep a St Joseph statue in a corner of the box sill in the cellar. He placed it there as soon as the first floor deck was on and St Jos was supposed to protect the house. We never had any issues occur in the house and I did the same in the home I build and never had any issues there as well.

After a lengthy listing period, a seller asked me to do this. I bought a St. Joseph statue, took it to my parish priest to bless. Buried it. The house sold the following week. No price reduction. I believe.
