Penguin Plunge 2012 Videos | Hampton Beach NH | Special Olympics

Feb 21, 2012 | Monika McGillicuddy | In : NH News and Events, Verani Realty News | Leave a comment

On February 5, 2012 nearly 1,000 people plunged into the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean.  It was a cold sunny day and the crowds started gathering early, all trying to nab the perfect spot to watch their friends, family and perfect strangers strip down and gleefully jump into the ocean.  I was lucky enough to get a front row spot thus being able to shot some videos of the event.

The  Penguin Plunge and the High School Plunge, which took place on the Saturday before the Penguin Plunge,  was able to raise  $688,380 to benefit the Special Olympics New Hampshire!  Great job everyone!

Will I see you there next year?

Verani and the State of NH Partner in Back to Work Program

NH Return to WorkSix weeks may seem like a long time for a job interview, but for people who have found employment through New Hampshire’s Return to Work Initiative, that interview may have been worth every minute.

Last winter, Lisa Eaton suddenly found herself unemployed — she was laid off from her job with a manufacturing company in Manchester. It was during a visit to her local NHWorks office — she went there every day — that she discovered the Return to Work program.

Return to Work matches an unemployed worker with a company that’s looking for help. The worker and the company agree to a no-strings-attached training period of up to 24 hours per week for six weeks. If they qualify for unemployment benefits, the workers can continue to receive that benefit during the training period, which is unpaid by the prospective employer.

“It is my favorite re-employment tool that we have,” said Tara Reardon, commissioner of the Department of Employment Security. “It gives both the job seeker and the employer a chance to see if it’s a good fit. It really works for the business and it really works for the job seekers.”

Since the program was introduced in 2010, 335 people, including Eaton, have found permanent jobs through Return to Work.

Walking the NH Coastline

Feb 14, 2012 | Robert Lemelin | In : NH News and Events | Leave a comment

Article by real estate agent Robert Lemelin

Westies walking the NH coastlineNH is the only state that you can walk its entire coastline without major effort.

Driving or bicycling from MA to ME along the NH coast may take about an hour with a few stops to enjoy the views. In Hampton you always see a lot of tourists strolling the strip. The state is in the process of constructing a new stage and multiple rest facilities along the beach. Continuing along the shore you pass Boars Head, the North Beach wall, then past the mansions of North Hampton. Into Rye you curve around the harbor, large stone protective berms block your view of the ocean in some areas. There are many pull offs along the ride to enjoy the majesty of the ocean and the Isles of Shoals. New Castle and South end Portsmouth offer antique homes built in the early days of settlement.

The idea of walking the westies (Rose and Angus) along the entire New Hampshire coast came after many different walks on the Rye beaches. When asked “Who wants to go for a walk”, their excitement always rises to a frenzy. With their enthusiasm I decided the entire NH coastline was actually a walkable feat. Driving from home, some heads out the window, we select the next leg of the trip.

Penguin Plunge 2009

Special Olympics New Hampshire Penguin Plunge 2012

There is something to be said about the drive and determination that some people have when supporting their charity of choice and this coming Sunday, February 5th, you can witness this first hand as a group of dedicated folks plunge into the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean all in support of the Special Olympics New Hampshire.

13th Annual Penguin Plunge

This is the 13th Annual Penguin Plunge and while I admire what they do and have actually enjoyed watching them do it in the past.   I have no desire to jump into the frigid waters off of Hampton Beach myself but rumor has it that a fellow Veranian might actually be plunging on a dare! Who could that be now… any guesses?

Watch the Plunge and be home in time for Super Bowl

The events kick off at 11:15 a.m. with the Costume Parade and at noon the Plunge begins, there will also be a lunch and awards ceremony starting at 12:30, so you can see you’ll have plenty of time to get home in time for the big game… Super Bowl!  Go Pats!

Enjoy!

BEDFORD, NH – Are You Okay Program sponsored by the Bedford Police Department

The Bedford Police of NH have a telephone reassurance program that is sponsored by the Bedford Police Department.

If you are a senior citizen, disabled, or feel you would benefit from a daily contact call, then the “Are You Okay” is for you.

Interested Bedford residents can pick up an application at the Bedford Police Department or at the Bedford Town Offices. Once an application is filed, a member of the Bedford Police Departmenet will contact you to set up a time to meet and officially enroll you in the program and answer any questions you may have.

Annual Great Meredith Rotary Ice Fishing Derby

Ice fishingNo need to stay inside during the long winter months this year, just waiting for the sun to come out dreaming about open water and summer fun! Be adventurous, bundle up, get outside, and try fishing in a whole new way – through the ice at the 33rd annual Great Meredith Rotary Ice fishing Derby the weekend of Feb. 11 and 12!

Ice fishing action can be fast and furious with fisherman from all across the country converging on Lake Winnipesaukee to vie for the fantastic prizes. Shawn Marzerka owner of Woods ‘N Water fishing and hunting guide services says “There is nothing like the excitement of seeing the yellow flag go up on your tip-up alerting you to a fish on. You are always imaging that this will be the big catch to get your fish hung up on the wall of fame and winning the grand prize.”

And the $63,000 worth of prizes this year are grand indeed. The 2012 grand prize for the largest Meredith Rotary-tagged rainbow trout is a John Deere XUV 825i Camo, second place pulls in a Polaris 500 Touring ATV, and third place gets an ice fishing package including a portable bob house.

Young anglers and their parents are not left out. The Derby will host a “Let’s Go Fishing” program for kids on Saturday February 11th in conjunction with the New Hampshire Fish & Game Department.

The Beaver Brook “Yurt”

Jan 20, 2012 | Lori Stoudt | In : NH News and Events | Leave a comment

LIVING OUTSIDE THE BOX!

Beaver Brook Association, with conservation lands in Brookline and Hollis in New Hampshire, is a non-profit educational organization that offers a multitude of programs to the local Southern NH communities, and has recently constructed a yurt.

What is a yurt you might ask? It is a portable eco-friendly solar panel structure. The Beaver Brook yurt, located in Maple Hill Farm, Hollis, NH, is a 30 foot White Mountain lighted and heated classroom that will be used for Beaver Brook programs.

Yurt living is magical and “outside the box” because while inside you can still hear all of nature singing and at play as the natural Earth surrounds you. It is also practical living for many as a seaside retreat or mountain getaway because it is economically priced, environmentally sound, and a sustainable choice that is extremely versatile.

A yurt can be great for a little vacation getaway on your land, an eco-friendly retreat, artist’s or writer’s studio, cozy guest house, or a simple hiding place you can call your own. Yurts can be tailored to your specification, and best of all, if you want to move it from New Hampshire to Maine, it’s no problem!

For more photos of the Beaver Brook yurt, you can visit their facebook album.
