Upcoming NH Garden Club Plant Sales

Jennifer Frost | Apr 16, 2012 | In : NH News and Events | 1 Comment

Buying your plants from a local garden club is the perfect way to improve your yard with affordable locally grown plants. Garden Club Members typically donate ‘divisions’ from the robust areas of their own gardens, so this is a great chance to get a healthy and hardy specimen.

Many plants are offered at a fraction of the cost from buying retail, and have just recently been dug from a local yard. These plant sales are often annual spring fundraisers for the local clubs and you never know what you will find. Garden club members are very helpful so feel free to ask about which plants are happy in sunny or shady locations.

Planet Marshmallow – New Dessert Bar Across from the Palace Theater in Manchester NH

Cammie Ferreras | Mar 13, 2012 | In : NH News and Events | 1 Comment

Planet MarshmallowLittle pillows from heaven…that’s what they are! If you haven’t been to Planet Marshmallow, you’re missing out. Mass produced plain marshmallows in a bag from the grocery store… how boring. Especially once you’ve tried the wonderfully made marshmallows from owner, Heather Cox, in a store near you.

These are handmade gourmet marshmallows in a variety of flavors like Salted Caramel, Chai Spice and Chocolate Chipotle, just to name a few. And the Peanut Butter pie is so yummy! They have some savory items on the menu too… but seriously, shouldn’t everyone have dessert first? That way there’s always room for it!

Coffee, desserts, make your own S’mores, tableside and chocolate fondue…need I say more? Try them soon and let me know which flavor is your favorite.

The Windham Rail Trail Just Keeps Getting Better (Bigger)!

Brian Healy | Mar 12, 2012 | In : NH News and Events | Leave a comment

Windham rail trailThere’s a little-known gem in Windham/Derry that few people along the I-93 corridor of Southern NH are aware of. If you’re looking for a great place to take the family or dog, or if you just need a new place to jog, try the Windham rail trail.

With the final 2 miles of trail recently paved into Derry’s downtown, the rail trail is now the longest continuous paved trail in NH, stretching from Roulston Road in Windham to downtown Derry (8 miles). On the trail you’ll find walkers, joggers, bikers, roller-bladers and even the occasional horseback-rider. The trail is relatively flat and it’s maintained well for a smooth ride whether you’re on wheels or just sneakers. The surface is paved making for an easy stroller-stride. A brisk ride along the trail will bring you past several scenic water bodies and natural habitats. The scenery can really take the edge off of your daily exercise or brisk jog. Much of the trail is cut into ledge on either side and it’s not uncommon to have a canopy of leaves overhead in the spring and summer months. In spots, the trail is well elevated above the landscape below which really brings out the beauty of the trail.

The trail is well marked with mileage markers at each half mile on the Windham side. While traveling the trail you’ll likely pass other riders, walkers and runners so you can feel comfortable that you’re not all alone out there. There’s also a renovation project in the works for the old Windham Depot Station that would appear to be finishing up this year. On the Depot end there are Port-o-Potties at the parking lot and the policy on trash and dog fouling is carry-in, carry-out. More details can be found on the trail website at: windhamrailtrail.org Give the trail a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Bird Banding Demonstration – Auburn NH

Admin | Mar 10, 2012 | In : NH News and Events | Leave a comment

Guest post by Beverly Youree of www.nhaudubon.org

Where: Massabesic Audubon Center, 26 Audubon Way, Auburn, NH
When: Saturday, March 24, 10:00am – 12:00pm
Cost: FREE

Join Jay Barry, licensed bird bander for 40 years, as he shows us the fascinating banding process from capture to release. Using mist nets to catch birds, we will ID, band, and record our findings for the national database.

You will be able to learn how to identify species, sex, and age with a variety of live subjects!

We will also discuss the MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) program that will be happening at Massabesic in summer. Analyses of the resulting banding data provide critical information relating to the ecology, conservation, and management of North American landbird populations, and the factors responsible for changes in their populations.
